UN refuses draft resolution for Iran sanctions
(MENAFN) The UN Security Council rejected a resolution, backed by Moscow and Beijing, that sought to extend sanctions relief for Iran by six months. This decision clears the path for limitation on Iran's nuclear program to be restored.
The draft resolution was defeated during Friday's vote, receiving four votes in favor (China, Russia, Pakistan, Algeria), nine against, and two withheld from voting. As a result, the sanctions against Iran—which had been suspended under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreed upon with major world powers—are set to be reinstated starting at midnight GMT on Saturday.
This event comes a month after the JCPOA signatories—France, Germany, and the UK—announced they had activated the supposed “snapback mechanism,” quoted Tehran's “significant non-performance” and its breach of the agreement.
Dmitry Polyansky, the deputy envoy of Russia to the UN, stated during the UNSC summit that Moscow “categorically rejects” remarks by Paris, Berlin as well as London that they had justification for activating the snapback mechanism.
